Report: Germany’s innovative capacity and options for action

Innovation is necessary to remain competitive, promote growth and secure prosperity. It is also the key to overcoming global challenges such as climate change. Against this backdrop, the Federation of German Industries (BDI), together with Roland Berger, Fraunhofer ISI and the Leibniz Center for European Economic Research, is presenting the Innovation Indicator 2024. Result:

Germany’s position in a comparison of the innovative capacity of 35 economies has eroded further.

The indicator compares the innovative capacity of 35 economies using a structured measurement model. The analysis focuses on three important aspects:

  1. The assessment of the current state of innovation capability (“creating innovations”).
  2. Research into the technological future of the countries (“Developing future fields through key technologies”).
  3. Assessing the sustainability of economic systems to determine whether they can operate within the limits of the planet and be successful in the long term (“sustainable economy”).

The report is of interest to managers for several reasons:

  1. Competitiveness: It provides insights into Germany’s ability to innovate compared to other economies, which is important for strategic decisions in order to remain competitive.
  2. Strategic planning: Analyzing the current innovation landscape enables managers to identify trends and develop targeted innovation strategies.
  3. Global challenges: The report addresses key challenges such as climate change, decarbonization and trade and technology conflicts, which are important for companies to act sustainably and in a future-proof manner.
